"What It Is" feat. Symmetry & Marcus Wheat

about

Music is catharsis for me these days. Rather than worrying about having the best verse or complicated rhyme schemes that might be super impressive I just want to make something that feels good while I am creating it and helps me process these last few years.

I'm more proud of the process that went into this song than anything I've ever created before. With the musical genius of Marcus Wheat, Nima Abbassi and Symmetry, I was able create a song that I truly love. I'm lucky to know such talented people. It is also kind of mind blowing that, besides me and Nima, this song was made without any of us being in the same room. I hope you enjoy it as much as I enjoyed creating it.

lyrics

(VERSE 1)
I never wondered what I would be when I grew up, I knew what I was, an MC
Writing in my rhymebook constantly, I use to skip class just to freestyle with B
Listening to beats while we’d pass the weed
And those were the days to me
But now I’m older and I get it, nobody’s just one thing
Something I’ve learned is judging a person by one thing they’ve done is undeserved
If you box yourself in, you’ll miss out on something else
Nothing is forever, weathering the storm and you’ll be better off than ever
And the next storm you’ll be ready with counter measures
That’s life shit, I’ve been down in the depths
Believe me, I was profoundly a mess, so down that everyone around me was stressed
But I’ve grown, I know that time’s just a test
It’ll be okay if you just wait it out
Don’t cave in now, patience pays and baby it’s paying now
So I’mma lay it down and hope that you play it loud enough that it shakes the ground and make memories for a lifetime, make me proud

(CHORUS)
Let it be what it is
Wear my heart on my wrist these days
And the harder it gets
The more that I keep saying
Let it be what it is, Let it be what it is

(VERSE 2)
When Mom died, didn’t wanna put page to pen
Honestly never knew if I would rap again
So I teared up when I felt that passion again
That feeling of being inside the muse and the music
Telling me, “go on do it!” Saying if I’m a student and learning all of this new ish
Am I just wasting my time if I ain’t trying to improve
Just putting out whatever hoping that people approve it
Yeah, that’s all ego and that ain’t even a bad thing,
I’m just thinking about it trying to work through
Like, is working to make music my work even worth doing?
Once you do it for work, they say the art of it’s ruined
I say I’m in it for love but always trying to get paid
So at the end of the day, what am I pursuing… yeah… right…
Cause it’s all about money these days
Even the conscious cats are trying to get paid
Rather than raise the level of young mind waves
And I ain’t even mad I just think it’s important to say

(CHORUS)
Let it be what it is
Wear my heart on my wrist these days
And the harder it gets
The more that I keep saying
Let it be what it is, Let it be what it is
